{"id":165,"date":"2019-08-24T02:48:57","date_gmt":"2019-08-24T02:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/psychologytt.org\/blog\/?p=165"},"modified":"2019-10-11T00:38:50","modified_gmt":"2019-10-11T00:38:50","slug":"ttap-honours-pioneer-psychologists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychologytt.org\/blog\/archives\/165","title":{"rendered":"TTAP HONOURS PIONEER PSYCHOLOGISTS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trinidad and Tobago Association of Psychologists (TTAP)\nhosted their second annual Social Event 2019 at the Trinidad Hilton on July 7<sup>th<\/sup>.\nIn attendance were over 120 mental health professionals and associates,\nincluding ParentingTT and Soroptimist International who gathered at the Belmont\nSalon to pay tribute to the organization\u2019s past presidents and to indulge in an\narray of tasty cuisine and invigorating conversation. President Elect Wendy\nJeremie was the master of ceremonies and started the event with a warm and jovial\nwelcome address. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TTAP Treasurer Camille Campbell led the room in prayer\nbefore President Dr. Margaret Nakhid-Chatoor introduced the event\u2019s theme \u201cThe\nPower of You\u201d with an inspiring speech. She emphasized the role of\npsychologists in maintaining the success and relevance of TTAP in relation to mental\nhealth issues in our nation. She stated that \u201cOur movements have to be\nintentional, directed and achieved by hard work, and especially by selfless\ncommitment\u201d. She encouraged fellow psychologists to serve wholeheartedly and to\nmake an impactful difference to the mental wellbeing of those in our society.\nEnding her speech on theme, Dr. Nakhid-Chatoor said, \u201cThe only power that\npeople have over you, is the power that you give them. Believe in yourself and\nin what you can be!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immediate Past President Dr. Katija Khan also addressed\nthe newly inducted psychologists, urging them to prepare for purposeful\nexecution of their role. She encouraged them to harness the \u2018power of you\u2019 and\nto be active through participation, service and advocacy. \u201cWe are only strong\nthrough our team and can only continue to be strong through the combined\nefforts of psychologists from different backgrounds, sub-fields and experience\nlevels\u201d. She continued, \u201cWe must work together to fulfil our mandate to\ncontribute to the wellbeing of our society in Trinidad and Tobago, the region\nand the larger global landscape\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Indera Sagewan, distinguished economist and television\nhost, was the guest speaker for the evening. She commanded the room\u2019s attention\nwith a rousing, heart-felt and moving speech, which described her arduous road\nto success and her survival in the face of numerous adversities. In keeping\nwith the theme, Dr. Sagewan inspired the audience to never give up hope and to\nuse their hardships to build resilience and to achieve success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A power point presentation on the work of TTAP\u2019s\npioneering past presidents was narrated by Jefferson Jurawan and Lisa Lalsingh.\nThese pioneers were then summoned by Assistant Secretary Victoria\nSiewnarine-Geelalsingh to be awarded with a certificate and token, in honour of\ntheir service to their country and to the field of psychology. The Past\npresidents included former Independent Senator, Laila Valere, Dr. Karen Moore,\nKarin Hatch, Dr. Diane Douglas, Kareen Ramcharitar, Marcia Tappin-Boxill, Anna\nMaria Mora, Cheyvonne Cyrus-Williams and Dr. Katija Khan. Dr. Keith Lequay and\nDr. Sean Stephens flew in from Jamaica and the USA respectively, to attend this\nauspicious occasion. Clinical psychologist and past TTAP President, Ms. Waveney\nRichards returned a vote of thanks on behalf of her stalwart colleagues, and urged\npracticing psychologists to avoid being distracted by everyday relational\nchallenges and band together for the progress of the field and the betterment\nof the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ending the formal part of the evening, TTAP\u2019s Public\nRelations Officer, Kelly McFarlane offered a final vote of thanks and a\nreminder to all present, to practice gratitude with each other.
